I was back in one of the rooms (can't remember which) doing keyboard overdubs when her time came. I was green, just starting out, and the session paid well, so there was no way I wan't taking that gig. Pre-cell phone era (obviously) and the guys watching the desk late night said they would be there to take a call as my wife was thinking that night was quite possibly the night. Seems I was there at a very late night session the night my first child was born. added my own and made sure teddy's vocals were a dB or 2 over Barney's level.lolz pandering to the singers ego.so he paid me lol I was working with Gerald Levert over there and Barney had a parking spot all his own.my dad used to know Kent, he was on the board of SPARS with him.i beat Barney on a mix off of a Teddy Pendergrass track I cut and somehow Teddy brought to him to mix.I told Teddy dag man.look I'll mix it for free and if you like it.pay me for it.I copped a little of Barney's stuff. For my money, the best engineer I ever worked with at Kendun was Barney Perkins. The variety of artists coming through Kendun was mind boggling. Cross, Lakeside (Your Wish Is My Command) mixed by Taavi Mote in A, Atlantic Starr, Devo, Gladys Knight, The Temps, Randy Meisner, The Gap Band, Cheryl Lynn, Dr. Joe Chiccarelli recorded Kasim Sultan's solo album in A (Kasim from Todd Rundgren's band), Christopher Cross Arthur's Theme mixed by Chet Himes in Studio D, along with The Allessi Brothers, produced by C. REO Speedwagon High Infidelity was recorded there. Spent a lot of time with that API console in studio B and the SSL B series in studio D down the street, later became The Enterprise. ![]() Anyone know what happened? Can't find much of anything about Kent. Just read that Kent passed away in 2007 and was buried at sea. I remember that Clocks album, I think it was Mike Flicker producing, yes? I used to work a lot with Barney Perkins both at Kendun and at Artisan in Hollywood. I was on staff at Kendun in the early 80's. ![]() Kendun had some of the best pianos ever recorded. That bright rock piano was the Yamaha C9 from this room. REO Speedwagon's classic "High Infidelity" was also recorded in D. I spent countless hours in studio D assisting Barney Perkins on projects such as DeBarge, Cheryl Lynn, Temptations, Dr. It had a shower with four shower heads, which felt great after working 3 days non-stop on a record. Studio D was self contained with a full kitchen, lounge and an apartment upstairs. Notice the rotary buss assignment knob and LED just above the VCA faders. It featured an SSL B Series desk, which sonically, was much warmer and fatter than the E Series that followed. This was a separate building down the block from the main complex on Glenwood Place. ![]() My good friend Bruce Swedien recorded George Benson 'Give me the Night' at Kendun in 1980 - is this film shot in there? - Quincy Jones - Jump Street Profile - Part 2 - YouTubeYes, the Quincy Jones-George Benson piece was shot in Kendun's Studio D. ![]()
